The Michigan City Board of Public Works & Safety met on October 19, 2026. The board unanimously approved an agreement with Marquis Electric for signage repairs, not to exceed $63,572, and contractor payment applications 2 and 3 for the Ameriplex Drive Roadway Reconstruction Phase 2 project; the payment amount was not stated. It also approved a $178,934.99 payment request for the 2026 INDOT Community Crossings Matching Grant roadway project and a special purchase of two used 2022 Ford Broncos for $40,796.44. The vehicles, funded from the current-year budget, are intended to address shortages for building and code inspectors. The board also approved revisions clarifying employees’ personal-time and vacation accruals, the 2027 Board of Works schedule, and the October 5 claims docket.
The mayor reported no response from CSX regarding railroad ties along Arthur Street or repairs to the Buffalo Street crossing; the board tabled the matter until December 7 for further legal and cost research. The city engineer reported that 28 of 40 audible pedestrian signals on Franklin Street were not working and is seeking repair or replacement pricing from Midwestern Electric; the board scheduled a follow-up for December 7 and discussed checking other crossings. In public comment, the mayor said a full Michigan Boulevard reconstruction could cost about $20 million, with funding and planning still unresolved; patching and overlays will continue in the interim. No contract award for that larger project was made at this meeting.
