Knox County commission workshop on elected-official compensation, held October 20, 2026. The informal, discussion-only meeting reviewed how state law and the county charter determine compensation for elected officials and related positions. Finance staff said the state’s general increase for elected officials this year was 2.63%, and explained that several offices’ salaries are linked by statute or charter, including school board compensation being tied to commission pay. A proposed resolution would automatically tie commission increases to the state schedule to remove annual pay decisions from commissioners; members also discussed capping increases at the lesser of the state and county employee increases. Staff estimated that following the state schedule since 2012 would have resulted in commission pay about $2,500 higher per member today.
Members expressed differing views about avoiding votes on their own compensation, keeping increases aligned with county employees, and maintaining predictable pay. One commissioner also suggested establishing a minimum county-employee raise tied to the state increase. No votes were taken, no spending or procurement actions were identified, and the discussion concluded without a decision on the proposal.
