The October 20, 2026, Fairfax County Public Schools School Board work session focused first on expanding and improving world-language programs. Staff presented options to address uneven access across schools, including language labs, additional online courses, high-school-credit language courses beginning in middle school, expanded immersion programs, and changes to elementary FLEX offerings. Proposed costs included about $520,000 for a language-lab model across 26 schools, compared with $750,000 under traditional staffing; $544,000 in recurring staffing and $275,000 in one-time development costs to add eight online languages; and, for immersion expansion, about $6 million in recurring staffing and $1.2 million in one-time costs. FLEX expansion was estimated at $10.8 million for grades K–6 or $3.7 million for grades 3–6. Staff described phased implementation and an estimated FY2028 cost range of roughly $3 million to $4.5 million for selected initiatives. Board members discussed affordability, instructional effectiveness, staffing capacity, equity, assessment, and whether to prioritize strengthening existing programs or expanding access. No funding allocation or procurement action was approved; staff was asked to develop next-step options and priorities for further board consideration. A middle-school access recommendation was described as requiring staffing shifts but no new funds.
The session then reviewed proposed updates to FCPS’s state and federal legislative positions and the process for the board’s delegate to the Virginia School Boards Association assembly. Discussion included school funding formulas, career and technical education funding, health-insurance options, and educational technology funding. Board members raised concerns about protecting public-school funding from being redirected to private-school vouchers and requested clarification or follow-up on several positions. The transcript records no contract awards, RFPs, vendor selections, or purchasing approvals.
