Body

Date

Jurisdiction

State & Local

The Athens Affordable Housing Commission met on October 20, 2026. It approved the September meeting minutes. City staff reported that the Welcome Home Ohio project’s planned unit development application was awaiting final surveys and subdivision plats needed to establish utility easements before City Council could proceed with readings. The Board of Zoning Appeals had also denied a short-term rental application; commissioners noted that short-term rental applications have been a recurring issue. No contract awards, purchases, budget allocations, or other procurement activity were identified.

Most of the meeting focused on draft housing recommendations for the comprehensive planning process. Commissioners discussed accessory dwelling units, housing density and zoning pathways for duplexes, townhomes, and existing nonconforming units; student rentals; parking; senior housing and aging in place; and modern manufactured or modular housing. They favored clarifying that the commission’s recommendations are not ranked and are not actions the commission itself will take, and suggested consolidating overlapping items and considering modular housing. No final recommendations were adopted; staff will revise and circulate the draft for further commission discussion next month.
