The regular Birmingham City Commission meeting was held October 19, 2026. Procurement and capital-project items included unanimous approval of a one-time contract with Cone Elevator to install state-required phone-line verifiers in all eight city parking-garage elevators; staff said the equipment would remain usable through future elevator work. The commission also approved the city’s annual municipal and community credit contract supporting Next senior transportation, with a direction for staff to review the program and alternatives, including SMART Flex. The city reported that its new ladder truck had passed final inspection and was expected to enter service by month’s end; no purchase amount or vendor was stated. For the East Lincoln Street project, planned for fiscal year 2026–27, the commission considered Option A for roadway alignment and related paving, sewer, traffic-signal, pedestrian, and bicycle-lane improvements. A resident also raised concerns about a Fairview Street sewer report and prior relining work; no procurement action was taken on that matter during the meeting.

The commission approved a right-of-way parking request for 33722 Woodward, allowing up to six on-street spaces to count toward required parking; discussion referenced a planned private investment of at least $60,000 in the concrete slip lane. It unanimously adopted amendments to the short-term-rental ordinance and extended the related moratorium, affecting future rental permits and listings. A proposed neighborhood-wide historic survey did not receive a second, while a separate motion to study one resident’s home passed unanimously. The commission also directed staff to gather resident and city-department data for a future urban deer-management discussion. No competitive bid award or new RFP was identified.
