The Ventura Unified School District special board meeting, identified by the title as October 20, 2026, focused primarily on a study session about possible school closures. The board made no closure decisions. Trustees agreed to refocus the analysis on elementary schools, remove middle and high schools from current closure consideration, and revise the criteria and data used in the next analysis. Staff reviewed potential cost savings, transportation, facility conditions and deferred maintenance, and bond-funded work. HVAC, roofing, and playground projects have been paused pending closure decisions; staff also provided cost information for possible gym HVAC upgrades, field renovations, and exterior painting, which are not currently part of the bond implementation plan. No project awards or spending approvals were made. A trustee asked about the RFP and bidding process for School Services of California, the school-closure committee’s facilitator, but the question was not answered during the meeting.
The board approved Resolution 2026-33 supporting Proposition 3 to maintain state revenue for California TK–12 public schools, by a 5–0 vote. Personnel commission candidates were interviewed as a conference item, with no appointment or other action taken. One candidate discussed potential savings from healthcare benefits, contracts, travel, and shared recruitment resources, but these were proposals only. The board also adopted an amended agenda and adjourned; no other procurement activity, contract awards, or purchasing approvals were identified.
