The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners’ regular meeting on October 20, 2026, included several funding and property matters. The board approved a $2.425 million acquisition for the Environmentally Endangered Lands program in Malabar, funded with $1.875 million from the program and a Nature Conservancy grant; staff said the purchase was below the two lowest appraisals. The board also approved a property acquisition intended to help mitigate downstream flooding in West Cocoa, though the purchase amount was not clear in the transcript. Separately, the Brevard Homeless Coalition reported receiving a nearly $9 million HUD award expected to support 64 new permanent supportive housing units over five years. The board accepted a nearly $267,000 donation designated for the Catherine Schweinsberg Rood Central Library and adopted an ordinance establishing the Brevard Barrier Island Land Authority, including authorization to collect a surcharge at Sebastian Inlet State Park.
The acquisitions, ordinance, and consent agenda passed unanimously. A public commenter questioned the sheriff’s proposed use of approximately $18.1 million in additional funds and suggested reconsidering a previously approved $5 million allocation, but the board took no action on that request during the meeting. The board also reappointed a member to the Educational Facilities Authority, which supports tax-exempt financing for educational facility projects; no new financing award was made.
