The Berkeley County Board of Zoning Appeals met on October 20, 2026. The board approved a special exception allowing a 250-foot telecommunications tower on an 18.3-acre parcel, proposed by Jonathan Yates for Optima Towers to serve Verizon and accommodate up to three additional broadband carriers. The applicant cited a coverage gap near Old Gilliard Road, Camp Hall, and nearby areas; FAA and state historic-preservation reviews had found no hazard to air navigation and no effect on historic resources. The approval passed by voice vote. No contract award, public expenditure, or purchasing action was identified.

The board denied a variance request for a townhome development near College Park to reduce driveway width from 18 to 16 feet; the motion to deny passed by voice vote. Members also approved the 2027 meeting calendar. Staff reported that board and commission members seeking reappointment will need to submit applications when their appointing council member’s term comes up for election; this applies across boards and commissions. Minutes from September 15, 2026, were approved, and the meeting adjourned.
