The Somerville School Committee met on October 19, 2026. The main facilities and spending discussion concerned water damage at West Somerville Neighborhood School after a roof drain failed during ongoing roof work. City and district staff described the cleanup, drying, and restoration schedule: heavy construction was expected to finish by the end of the week, with painting and classroom restoration to follow; most roof work was expected to be completed by the end of October, with punch-list work possibly continuing into early November. The roof contractor and district’s on-call environmental specialists were involved, but responsibility for costs and any insurance claims had not been determined. Staff said damaged items were inventoried and that the district would procure replacements; the superintendent expected the costs to be manageable within existing efficiencies, while committee members raised the possibility of a later finance discussion. The educators’ union also offered up to $2,500 in book-grant support for affected staff. The asset-management director cited other school capital priorities, including boilers at Argenziano and roof and HVAC work at Healey; a committee member also noted planned acoustical upgrades at Healey. No new construction contract award or procurement amount was approved at this meeting.

The committee discussed requests for clearer, more frequent family updates during the West school disruption, and district staff committed to providing at least twice-weekly building updates. The superintendent also presented the out-of-school-time program’s finances and operations: enrollment had increased, the program had reduced vendor spending and redundant staffing, and Apollo was expected to move to a revolving account, increasing contracted-services spending in that line. Members raised questions about affordability, access, and future budget pressures, but no related purchasing action was taken. The committee approved September 14 minutes, subcommittee reports, a policy manual with one policy held back for further review, a diploma, a union side letter, and a field trip for 40 chorus students to Providence at a stated student cost of $22; these votes did not approve a procurement contract.
