WayneWestland Board of Education meeting, October 19, 2026. The board received the district’s fiscal 2026 audit presentation. Auditors reported an unmodified opinion on the financial statements and a material-weakness finding related to expenditures exceeding adopted budgets in two non-major funds: cafeteria/milk and hot lunch, and student activities. The general fund recorded approximately $151.3 million in expenditures against a $151.9 million final budget, a $7.79 million operating loss, and a $25.9 million ending fund balance. The district’s corrective action is to improve purchase-order tracking so invoices and commitments are identified earlier; the single-audit report remained pending release of the federal compliance supplement. No contracts, bids, or purchasing awards were approved. Public comments raised questions about planned computer replacements and the need for Smart Notebook software, classroom furniture choices and safety, and construction change orders related to a bond project, but no related procurement decisions were taken.
The board also reviewed the strategic plan, including curriculum and assessment work and an attendance initiative targeting a 5% reduction in chronic absenteeism by spring 2027. Attendance monitors funded through grants are following up with families, and administrators offered to provide regular data updates. The board approved the consent agenda and recommended an assistant principal appointment; it also voted to enter closed session for a personnel evaluation. These actions did not include a reported contract or purchasing award.
