Policy

The October 20, 2026, regular meeting of the Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners included public hearings on proposed zoning amendments. Commissioners unanimously approved moving forward with the notice-of-intent process for amendments covering zoning permit fees, short-term rentals, the district use chart, and definitions. The proposal would increase the zoning permit fee from $50 to $100 and generally limit short-term rentals to the growth management area or the Farson-Eden response area. Washington-area residents raised concerns about emergency response, roads, water supply, parking, and neighborhood impacts; the county will continue the public comment process before making a final decision.

The commission also unanimously certified amendments to home-occupation regulations after a 45-day comment period that received no comments. The changes establish a three-tier system, with permit requirements based on the activity’s impact, to allow more flexibility while addressing effects on neighboring properties. No procurement activity, contract awards, or purchasing decisions were identified.
