Newark Unified School District board meeting, October 20, 2026: The board considered plans to consolidate and rebuild elementary schools, with staff recommending both projects as a way to create larger, more sustainable schools and address the district’s approximately $700 million in facility needs. Speakers raised concerns about school communities, vacant sites, the middle school’s condition, project sequencing, bond spending, and whether the environmental review improperly split the interim moves from the later rebuilds. Board members supported the elementary investments while noting the need for community-building plans and future attention to middle school facilities.

The board approved resolutions 2026.10.02 and 2026.10.03, each by a 5–0 vote, advancing the Schilling/Lincoln and Birch Grove Primary/Intermediate projects and their interim student moves. These votes did not award construction or design contracts. Staff said a revised bond budget and design contracts aligned with the board’s direction would be brought forward on November 17; later environmental-review resolutions for the completed designs are also anticipated. Speakers cited roughly $70 million per rebuild, while the meeting included no final project budget approval. As follow-up, staff will explore student access to personal computers or other computing resources, and the board requested updates on middle school conditions and a student request to use the gym for after-school sports.
