The Anchorage School District Board held a work session on October 20, 2026, to review how capital-planning priorities are set ahead of a finalized bond proposal expected for board consideration next month. Staff described a deferred-maintenance backlog approaching $1.5 billion and a preliminary list of roughly $130 million in projects. The discussion covered facility repairs and upgrades, including Romig roof and structural work, a fully inclusive Chinook playground, seismic improvements at Klatt, secure vestibules, roof and structural work at Tudor and Whittier, and electrical-service replacement at East High School. Playground replacements and parking-lot repairs were also discussed as district-wide needs. Staff said project cost estimates were escalated for inflation and noted that some work may qualify for state major-maintenance reimbursement or FEMA funding.
Board members discussed keeping the proposed bond below approximately $60 million, while survey results showed support leveling off around $50–$60 million, with a median near $52 million. Staff will hold individual or small-group briefings with board members and provide more detailed project materials; the proposal is expected to proceed to bond counsel in December. The board also discussed public messaging, school right-sizing, and the potential costs and lead time of moving the Education Center. No procurement awards, spending motions, or votes were reported.
