At the October 13, 2026, Mount Vernon City School District Board of Education work session, administrators presented updates on early-childhood education and the district’s 2025–26 academic and financial plan. Pre-K staff reported assessment gains and discussed small-group instruction, a bilingual classroom pilot, Heggerty, and pilots of Magic School AI for teacher preparation and parent communication. Khan Academy resources are expected to be available at no cost for three years through a national grant. The superintendent said pre-K expansion may have significant budget implications, noting a $10,000 funding increase this year but a need to address limited space; before- and after-school care was raised as a future discussion, not an approved expenditure.

Facilities needs were also discussed after trustees raised concerns about deteriorating rubber playground surfacing at Mandela. The superintendent reported a $192,000 quote to repair and replace the surfacing and said the district was considering alternatives such as grass or wood chips, along with a wall to divert water, and reviewing playgrounds more broadly. The board approved general-fund transfers and took other agenda actions, including approval of check-warrant and claims reports and adoption of audit-related policies; no specific procurement award or contract approval was identified. The district’s financial-plan update also cited work underway on a budget calendar and longer-term financial and facilities plans.
