The City of Charleston Commission on Disability met on October 16, 2026. Members discussed accessibility priorities that could inform future city capital work, including repainting accessible parking spaces on city property and adding curb cuts along corridors such as King Street and at the Calhoun and Rutledge entrance to the Market. Because some streets are controlled by SCDOT, members discussed asking City Council to advocate for improvements and recommending that accessibility features be incorporated early when streets or other infrastructure are already being addressed. The commission also discussed sidewalk obstructions and uneven brick sidewalks, and the need to share an annual list of accessibility priorities with City Council.

Members considered opportunities for inclusive playgrounds and public spaces, including Brittlebank Park, the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center area, and parks due for renovation. They discussed a Miracle Field and possible playground features at W.L. Stephens, but requested that the plans be obtained for review; comments about other park renovation funding were not confirmed. The commission also noted that push-button door openers had been installed and tested. No contracts, vendors, procurement approvals, or spending motions were identified; the meeting’s recorded votes concerned approval of the August and September minutes.
