Athens City Council’s regular meeting on October 19, 2026, included public hearings on a neighborhood corridor overlay zone, annexation and zoning of the Athens County Children’s Services property, and an eight-home affordable housing development supported by a $2 million Welcome Home Ohio grant. The council also discussed proposed fees for special-event street closures, intended to recover about one-third of city costs. Ordinances establishing those fees received first readings only; members raised questions about residential closures, fee levels, and exemptions, with further public and council discussion expected. The mayor reported that bids for the Columbia Road project to replace two water lines would be opened October 26.

Council unanimously approved an appropriation amendment (Ordinance 92-26) covering, among other items, $40,000 for community-center HVAC cleaning and a $19,000 appropriation for a fire safety intervention grant and zodiac boat replacement. It also approved a $22,000 payment to Prokos Rentals for Stimson Avenue sewer repair. A separate appropriation amendment received a first reading, including $45,000 for water-system work, $36,000 for parking-garage elevator repairs, $30,000 for portable flood barriers, $65,000 for parking-system maintenance contract fees, $15,000 for landfill gas monitoring and EPA compliance services, and $4,730 for website-related professional services. The council adopted the 2027 sewer-rate ordinance, including an increase in yard-waste bag fees from $2 to $2.50; no new contract award was identified.
