The City of Topeka Planning Commission met on October 19, 2026. It unanimously approved, 7-0, a rezoning recommendation for the Amoco property at 5977 SW 29th Street, a 0.915-acre site, from C-2 to a PUD allowing C-2 uses. The request would permit a new convenience store and reduce the rear setback from 25 feet to 10 feet; staff recommended approval subject to 11 conditions. The commission also approved a package of zoning-code text amendments, including standards for smaller drinking establishments in C-2 districts, requiring a conditional use permit for convenience stores with large-truck services, and provisions addressing modular homes, multiple homes on one lot, and short-term rentals. No contracts, vendor selections, or purchasing actions were discussed.
The commission postponed its recommendation on CPA 2602, proposed updates to the Land Use and Growth Management Plan, voting 7-0 to delay consideration until a later meeting so commissioners could review the material further. Public commenters raised concerns about potential data-center proposals and their possible health and aviation impacts; data centers were not an agenda item and no action was taken on them.
