At the October 19, 2026 Appomattox County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board approved a letter of support for a replacement fire engine, estimated to cost about $550,000. The fire department requested county support of approximately $330,000, alongside about $220,000 from the town; the motion passed 4–1. The board also approved $50,000 in temporary funding for the rescue squad to address a loss of mutual-aid ambulance coverage, to cover the next 30 days and be reconsidered at the November meeting. The squad was asked to provide a more detailed funding plan. Other spending actions included carrying forward $142,345 in unspent FY2026 Department of Social Services funds to FY2027 and authorizing the county administrator to execute a Virginia agriculture department grant agreement for the FFA Alumni Agricultural Complex. The board approved an appointment of a part-time residential building inspector and a First Responders Appreciation Festival budget not to exceed $5,000. A new county office building was discussed, with an estimated cost of $1.2–$1.3 million; plans are being developed, but no construction award was made.
The board voted to ask the Planning Commission to review zoning changes that would make data centers subject to conditional-use review, potentially affecting future development proposals; residents also raised concerns about the existing by-right zoning and proposed data center project. A public hearing for a proposed wireless communications tower by The Towers LLC was scheduled for December 14, 2026. Public comment focused extensively on library board appointments, the library’s mission and state funding, and access to materials; the board discussed seeking a legal review, but no procurement action on the library was taken. The sheriff also requested a resolution or letter supporting dedication of a bridge, with formal action deferred.
