The Wake County Public Schools Budget and Finance Committee met on October 20, 2026. Members approved the September minutes by motion and unanimous voice vote. The main discussion reviewed findings from the district’s market compensation study, prepared with MGT, comparing school-based, facilities and operations, academic support, administrative, and other positions with neighboring districts, larger districts, and Wake County government. The presentation found that competitiveness varies by role, with principals and many skilled trades, technical, and administrative positions trailing market comparisons; salary compression also means some roles become less competitive at higher experience levels. Staff noted that the study’s $1,500 threshold for classifying salaries as competitive was a presentation method, not a recommendation from the study.
Members discussed recruitment and retention challenges, state principal-pay changes, prior local salary increases, and constraints on funding facilities and operations staffing. They asked staff to provide clearer comparisons for roles such as HVAC technicians and to examine how Charlotte-Mecklenburg structures spending and compensation. The committee also discussed whether future efforts should target particularly critical positions. No contract awards, solicitations, purchasing decisions, budget allocations, or procurement-related motions were identified; the compensation discussion did not result in a spending action.
