At its October 19, 2026 meeting, the Columbus County Board of Commissioners approved several spending and procurement items. The board approved a vehicle-lease amendment with Trans D to add replacement vehicles, and approved two change orders for the Sheriff’s Office project with Walters Contracting Company: $1,076,483.15 for a parking-lot canopy/carport and front entry, and $194,292.78 for storefront replacement and new flooring. Both were to be paid from the SKIFF allocation. The consent agenda also included North Carolina Shelter Grant bids for automated transfer switches, which had been approved at the September 21 meeting. Budget amendments approved included $728,569 for Social Services, $183,452 for a local law-enforcement bonus, and additional Health Department funding of $2,332, $63,098, and $8,064, plus a $0 Health Department line-item reallocation.
The board tabled the proposed amendment to Chapter 10 of the planning and zoning ordinance after commissioners raised concerns about its effects on existing small lots, setbacks, and permitting, and requested further review and coordination among county departments. This was not a final policy approval. Public commenters also requested help resolving the Columbus County Farmers Market’s closure and questions about vendor operations; staff directed them to follow up with a county employee, but no spending or reopening action was recorded. The board approved revisions to its fund-balance policy and several personnel policies; other personnel-policy items were tabled. It also approved the Adult Services report and adopted proclamations recognizing Everlena Davis and Breast Cancer Awareness.
