The City of Sacramento Preservation Commission met on June 26, 2024. It approved the prior meeting minutes by motion and vote. The main discussion concerned draft objective design standards for accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on historic properties. Staff explained that the proposed standards would provide a ministerial approval path, while applicants seeking design flexibility could use the existing site plan and design review process, which carries additional fees. Commissioners and a public speaker offered feedback on matters including stucco, HVAC equipment, and making the alternative review path clear. Staff plans to refine the draft with input from a working group and community organizations, then return to the commission for a possible recommendation to City Council; no standards were adopted at this meeting.

The commission also reviewed a first public draft of Sacramento’s LGBTQ+ historic context statement. Staff described the project as grant-funded, including a recently received $10,000 National Trust for Historic Preservation supplemental grant and a separate $5,000 supplemental grant supported by matching funds from Preservation Sacramento; community stipends support research and outreach. Commissioners provided feedback for the next draft. No contracts, bids, vendor selections, or procurement approvals were identified. During public comment, a Colonial Heights resident raised concerns about six palm trees removed by a tree service contracted by SMUD; the commission took no action, and the chair suggested the topic be considered for a future agenda.
