The Michigan City Sanitary District Board of Commissioners held a special meeting on October 14, 2026. The board approved a $72,500 fall tree-planting award to Dogwood Hills Tree Farm for the Save the Salmon project at Carver Nature Park. The district had requested quotes from four companies and received one by the deadline. The spring planting phase, quoted at $54,900, was deferred. The district plans to water the trees with its own staff; the quote did not include a performance guarantee, though the vendor would replace trees found diseased or sick shortly after planting. The work is intended to restore streamside shade and support cooler water temperatures in Trail Creek.
The board also approved a correction to the rate-and-fee resolution, clarifying that the 300-CFF minimum billing amount and septic-hauler fees remain as previously intended, with no change to rates. It approved final contractor pay requests of $10,271.70 and release of $157,179.31 in retainage for the ARPA-funded sewer extension; the project was reported complete and about $26,000 under its revised $1,698,626 budget. A $1,500 billing-system expenditure to link parcel data was reported as already approved under staff authority. Bond anticipation note planning was presented for information only, with resolutions and a future bond sale still anticipated; no bond action was taken at this meeting.
