At the October 15, 2026 Reading School Committee meeting, members reviewed potential budget reductions in case the local override fails. District administrators presented scenarios that could address an estimated $3–4 million gap, including staffing and class-size changes, reductions to student programs, higher fees or tuition, transportation and facilities savings, and use of reserves. They emphasized that the scenarios were preliminary, not recommendations, and that no budget cuts were decided. The presentation cited a 5.25% budget increase to maintain current services, staffing at about 81% of the budget, and approximately $12.85 million in cost avoidance associated with bringing some special-education students back into district. Committee members discussed seeking more detailed information, including on athletics costs and fees, while noting concerns about one-time savings and impacts on students. The Kilum school construction project was reported underway, but no construction contract or procurement action was discussed. No contract awards, bids, or vendor selections were identified.

After public comment from educators, students, and community members about the potential effects of reductions, the committee voted 5–0 to endorse the override and authorize a factual public statement of its endorsement. The committee also voted 5–0 to name the RMHS stadium press-box announcing booth the Ted Bryson Announcing Booth, and 5–0 to name the fieldhouse weight room the Robert and Elizabeth Mixon Fitness Center and its training room the Robert Nixon Training Room. A parent-supported student theater donation was approved 4–0, with one member recusing. The committee postponed the MCCAST results presentation to a later meeting.
