🚨 Public Safety Policy

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners’ Committee of the Whole met on October 15, 2026, to review its proposed state legislative platform. Commissioners discussed priorities including reducing residential property-tax pressure while preserving critical services; maintaining a predictable countywide sales-tax distribution formula; enabling consolidation of planning and zoning functions in the urbanized unincorporated area; and seeking county nuisance-abatement authority. The platform also supports a proposed $6.2 million statewide community-corrections funding enhancement to address potential losses under a revised funding formula. Commissioners raised additional issues including motor-vehicle services, regional transit, and tax-increment financing; a proposed I-435 bus-and-shoulder item was to be removed pending further regional transit planning.

The board approved the legislative platform by a 7–0 vote, with one commissioner expressing reservations. The meeting concerned legislative advocacy and funding formulas rather than purchasing: no contracts, vendors, bids, or procurement awards were identified. A discussion of community-based stormwater partnerships was postponed until after a break.
