The Charleston County School District Health Advisory Committee held its first meeting of the 2026–27 year on October 15, 2026. Members elected Maria as chair, Christopher as vice chair, and Lindsay as secretary. The committee reviewed its duties under South Carolina’s Comprehensive Health Act, its meeting schedule, and district updates on growth-and-development instruction. The district reported that its two currently approved supplemental curricula remain available for school selection for their five-year approval periods; principals choose among approved options. Last year, the district’s itinerant teachers served about 6,070 students, and the district adjusted lessons to strengthen material on safety and healthy relationships. Limited teacher capacity meant charter schools did not receive itinerant instructors, though their host teachers may use the curriculum.

The committee began reviewing Heritage Keepers’ Sexual Risk Avoidance Education Levels 1 and 2, whose approval cycle is ending. Members were asked to review the materials and checklist before the November 19 meeting, when a Heritage Keepers representative is expected to answer questions; staff will also circulate requested videos and additional alignment information. The committee’s review is advisory and may inform future school use, with any recommendation subject to standards alignment and any needed instructional parameters. No contract awards, purchasing decisions, budget allocations, or other procurement activity were identified.
