At its October 15, 2026 meeting, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners considered several grant-related actions. It approved an approximately $1.031 million U.S. Department of Justice Byrne grant for CLEMIS modernization, with 11 votes in favor and six opposed; commissioners raised concerns about grant language requiring information-sharing with ICE and about CLEMIS data retention and privacy safeguards. A separate DOJ grant acceptance for the northern border helicopter patrol, listed as $2.1 million, passed after a commissioner questioned why the same amount appeared for both fiscal years 2027 and 2028, potentially implying $4.2 million; the transcript does not show that discrepancy being resolved before the vote. The board also approved an amendment moving grant funding away from the prosecutor’s office, and approved a $26,000 grant for padded Kevlar uniforms for the Sheriff’s Department. The chair reported authorizing submission of a $92,160 FY2027 My LEAP Out of School Time grant application for Oakland County Parks because of the grant deadline.
Surveillance technology, data security, and oversight were prominent topics. Public commenters raised concerns about a reported misuse of Flock license-plate camera data, county and municipal camera access, and vendor safeguards; one commenter also cited Madison Heights’ decision not to renew its Flock contract. These comments did not result in a recorded county contract award, cancellation, or procurement vote. Commissioners announced plans to seek information about the data breach, while Oakland County Parks’ removal of 19 cameras was mentioned during public comment. The board referred proposed resolutions on annual departmental AI-use disclosure and an AI/public-engagement subcommittee to committee. Motions to discharge whistleblower-protection and civil-immigration-enforcement resolutions from committee failed. The meeting also approved Brad Hansen’s appointment as Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Coordinator; no contract or purchasing decision was identified in that appointment.
