The Washington County, Wisconsin, Public Works Committee meeting on October 16, 2026, reviewed a proposed Health and Human Services building project. The building committee recommended new construction over remodeling or a public-private partnership, with an estimated cost of $35–$40 million. The committee took no vote on the project. The proposal was scheduled for Executive Committee review, with a possible November request to authorize roughly $1 million for architectural fees and a decision by the County Board anticipated in December. The preliminary schedule anticipates contracting in spring 2027, construction beginning in June 2027, and occupancy in early 2029. Members discussed building size, future staffing and space needs, and redevelopment of the existing site.
The committee also discussed the county’s shared-ride taxi service, operated under a five-year contract with Rightway: two base years and three optional renewals. No contract changes or procurement decisions were made. Members considered potential cost and revenue measures ahead of a funding shortfall expected in 2028, including service hours, fleet composition, fares, and service area. Staff cited an estimated need of about $600,000 for operating costs plus $50,000 for capital, and agreed to provide more detailed ridership breakdowns and clarify the state’s 10% service-reduction threshold. The committee also reviewed transit ridership reporting and requested additional charts by rider category and trip purpose for a future meeting.
