The Chaves County Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting was held October 15, 2026. Procurement and funding actions included approval of a $55,585.83 amendment to a New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration grant agreement, extending the reversion date to June 30, 2028, and authorizing the reallocated funds for vehicle purchases for county departments. The board also approved a fiscal year 2027 budget adjustment that incorporated volunteer fire department carryover balances, and approved applying to the New Mexico Environment Department for financial assistance to assess brackish-water treatment options. The board approved two fire apparatus purchases: a Type 1 wildland brush truck from UNRA Fire for $264,288 under HGAC contract FS12-23, with $147,472 identified from replacement-schedule funds; and a pumper from Citins Martin for $939,717 under NMSPA contract 10-00000000-21-000018H, funded with $800,000 from replacement-schedule funds and $141,717 from fire-protection funds. Payables totaling $4,615,743.61 were also approved.

The board considered inducement resolutions for proposed industrial revenue bond financing of battery-storage projects for Roswell Energy Storage LLC and Chaves Energy Storage LLC, on behalf of NextEra Energy Resources LLC, for up to $86 million. The resolutions would have started the process for a later public hearing and ordinance; they did not themselves authorize bonds or commit county funds. Commissioners raised questions about tax abatements, PILOT payments, jobs, and project benefits, and the motions failed for lack of a second, so no action authorizing the financing was taken. The board also discussed updates to the county comprehensive plan, including proposed edits and follow-up work; the transcript does not clearly capture a final vote on that item.
