At its August 19, 2026 regular meeting, the United Independent School District Board held a public hearing and approved the 2026–27 budget and a total tax rate of $0.696290 per $100 of taxable value ($0.612800 for maintenance and operations and $0.083490 for interest and sinking). Board discussion cited an anticipated deficit of about $15 million and enrollment of 38,668, above the 38,250 target. The administration proposed reducing board discretionary funds from $350,000 to about $240,000, reallocating roughly $110,000 to Communities in Schools; trustees supported the change, with individual allocations discussed at approximately $34,265. A staff member also urged the district to address athletic-trainer shortages and compensation concerns, but no related spending action was recorded.

The board delegated authority to the superintendent, in consultation with the board, to execute an agreement for the purchase of attendance credits if needed under the school-finance process; the item was described as a contingency, and the district was said not to be near the applicable threshold. In property matters, trustees voted to reject the bid for 165 acres under Bid 2026-014, take no action on the offer for 20.0647 acres under Bid 2026-015, and proceed with a resolution initiating the sale of surface-only lots 1A and 2A in James Haynes Industrial Park. The board also approved donations, including $2,000 from All State World Cargo and $1,500 from Laredo Sports Medicine Clinic for JB Alexander High School, plus four donations totaling $4,800. No vendor contract award or purchasing bid approval was identified.
