At its August 17, 2026 special meeting, the Socorro ISD Board of Trustees held a public hearing on the 2026–27 tax rate and reviewed a balanced budget of approximately $547 million across the general, child nutrition, and debt service funds. The board approved an interest-and-sinking tax rate of 27¢ per $100—above the 23.55¢ minimum—with excess revenue available for debt defeasance and other lawful debt-service purposes, then approved a defeasance resolution. It adopted a total tax rate of $1.0505 per $100, including 78.05¢ for maintenance and operations, and called a voter-approval tax rate election for November 3, 2026. The proposed 12 additional M&O pennies were estimated to generate $49.2 million in recurring annual revenue, including about $31.7 million in state funding; the district described intended uses such as staffing and class-size improvements, student programs, campus safety, technology, HVAC work, and bus replacement, contingent on voter approval.
The board also approved a joint election services contract with El Paso County for the November 3 election, at a preliminary estimated cost of $339,320; the cost had been included in the district’s budget, while polling locations remained to be finalized. The board separately approved the internal auditor’s evaluation following executive session. No other vendor awards or purchasing actions were identified.
