The City of Portsmouth Trees and Public Greenery Committee met on October 14, 2026, to review tree-removal requests and public-tree management. For the Ledgewood Drive development, which involves housing, access, and stormwater conveyance through the public right-of-way, the committee voted to request updated plans and alternatives that could preserve more trees before reconsidering the request. Several removal requests were denied or deferred in favor of pruning and monitoring, including trees at 86 Thornton Street, 15 Woodworth Avenue, 122 Baxter Road, and Langdon Park; removal requests for trees at 213 South Street and other locations were approved. A proposed removal at another park site did not pass. Staff noted that removing some large trees could cost roughly $3,000–$4,000 each, with possible coordination or cost-sharing with Eversource where utility work is involved.
The committee discussed the 2027 tree-planting program, with residents receiving letters to indicate species preferences, and noted that a resident donated the city’s holiday tree. Members also proposed drafting guidance defining “exigent circumstances” under the urban forestry ordinance while preserving the tree warden’s ability to act in emergencies; no policy change was adopted. No contract awards, competitive bids, or other procurement approvals were identified.
