The Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education meeting on September 13, 2023 included facilities procurement and financing actions. The board approved an emergency exterior-wall repair at Huron High School by Grit Services LLC of Wixom for $82,000; staff said it was the lowest qualified of two bids and that removed brick would be reused in a later phase. Athletic-field maintenance and lawn-maintenance services were presented for briefing, with staff recommending a three-year athletic-field maintenance contract with DJ Landscape based on bids and positive feedback from athletic directors. The contract items were not voted on during the meeting. The board also unanimously authorized a line of credit of up to $15 million for fiscal year 2023–24 to manage cash-flow gaps, including a $9,000 fee to open the facility; interest would apply only to any amount drawn. Staff reported that no additional items had been authorized under the board’s summer purchasing authority.

The board voted 5–2 to approve Superintendent Janice Swift’s settlement and resignation agreement, and discussed the interim-superintendent and permanent-search processes. Trustees considered an overview presentation from the Michigan Association of School Boards and discussed gathering input for a draft interim-superintendent job description; no search firm or consultant was selected or contracted. Public comments and staff/association reports raised concerns about special education services, student transportation safety, staffing, board conduct, and the superintendent transition. The finance department also outlined preparations for the district’s annual audit, expected to be presented in November.
