The City of Laredo Drug & Alcohol Commission meeting was held October 14, 2026. Members reviewed September substance-use and outreach data: public health reported seven overdose deaths for the month and distribution of 950 naloxone doses through 10 sites, including a 24-hour location at Roots Recovery Center. Police reported 12 overdose reports, 15 calls for service, and two deaths in September; both deaths occurred in District 4. Detox services conducted 75 screenings, resulting in 55 admissions, and noted cocaine as a changing substance-use trend. The commission also discussed wound-care outreach, school presentations, medication take-back activities, and youth prevention programs.

A member shared an informational federal funding opportunity: the U.S. Department of Justice’s FY2026 Community and Schools Youth Drug Prevention Program, with $12 million available nationally, 16 anticipated awards of $750,000 each, a three-year term, and no required match. This was not an application or funding request by the commission. WestCare also reported purchasing 22 medication-disposal boxes for possible placement at approved locations; no city contract award, procurement vote, or budget allocation was identified. The commission nominated and seconded Earl Molina as co-chair, and members agreed to move the next meeting from Veterans Day to November 17.
