The Gardena City Council meeting on October 13, 2026, approved the city’s participation in the South Bay Regional Housing Trust through a joint powers agreement, with no immediate financial impact and no dues currently planned. The trust has 11 member cities and approximately $7 million annually to support affordable housing; projects would require approval from the city where they are proposed. Council Member Francis was appointed the city’s representative and Mayor Pro Tem Tanaka the alternate. The council also approved two park-equipment purchases: $56,911.15 for ABI Force Z23 SLT baseball-diamond equipment from sole-source vendor California Turf Equipment and Supply, Inc., and $118,355.38 for 26 aluminum bleachers from Sports Facilities Group, Inc., the lowest and most responsive of two quotes received (the other quote was $173,375). The bleachers will be funded from the deferred maintenance fund. Both purchase motions passed unanimously, 5–0.
The council tabled a proposed special business activity permit for Care for the Children to paint residential curbs and solicit voluntary donations, requesting that the applicant attend a future meeting and address questions about its mission, donation handling, and benefits to Gardena residents. Separately, the city manager discussed a long-standing IT and network-security consulting arrangement with Bear Consulting International, in place since 2002, and the need to assess the services and options as the city considers hiring an IT manager; no procurement action was taken. Sustainability projects—including recently purchased electric vehicles and 71 installed public EV chargers—were mentioned in connection with the city receiving a sustainability award.
