State & Local
The City of El Cerrito Library Task Force met on October 13, 2026, for a tour of the library and discussion with staff. Staff described significant facility and capacity issues, including aging and damaged building elements, leaks and basement flooding, inadequate ventilation and no air conditioning, limited security, accessibility and fire-code concerns, cramped work and programming areas, and insufficient bathrooms. They also noted increased traffic and book processing while Kensington Library is closed, with daily visits rising from about 380–400 to 450–500. These constraints limit programming and prevent some county services from being offered at the branch.
No contract awards, bids, purchases, or spending approvals were identified. Task force members discussed the need to understand the building’s maintenance and renovation history; city staff said they could check available records and provide cost estimates for accessibility improvements, including the exterior handrails, at the next meeting. These were information-gathering actions, not approved expenditures.
