The City of San Marcos’s first meet-and-confer session with the San Marcos Professional Firefighters Association was held October 8, 2026. The parties agreed to the proposed negotiation ground rules and planned to sign them. They discussed management and labor proposals concerning wages, benefits, leave, promotion and employment conditions, but made no final agreement on compensation or contract terms. Management proposed exploring rank-specific increases informed by a market study, rather than uniform increases, and discussed balancing compensation decisions across the city’s workforce and maintaining flexibility during the contract term. A compensation and language review committee is to work through priority items and report progress at the November 10 meeting.

Topics included vacation and holiday leave payouts, longevity and promotion pay, certification and paramedic incentives, and proposed assignment pay for firefighters assigned to a medical-response squad. Participants cited an estimated $50,000–$75,000 cost to send an employee to paramedic school and discussed $100 as a possible squad assignment payment; neither amount was approved. The discussion also covered possible operational use of a squad vehicle, but no vehicle purchase, contract award, procurement approval, or spending vote was identified.
