The Sun Prairie Area School District’s annual meeting on October 5, 2026, included the proposed 2026–27 budget presentation. The district reported a balanced $167 million general-fund budget and a $226.1 million budget across all funds. The projected tax levy was $99,332,732; a motion to levy that amount was seconded and approved by a majority after attendees requested a show-of-hands vote, with opposition recorded. Final budget and tax-rate adoption was expected at a later board meeting in October. The presentation also noted projected federal Title funding reductions of $157,000, no staffing increases and a net reduction of 2.0 FTE through attrition, and a projected fund balance just above 20% of the general-fund budget. The 2024 referendum’s $25 million phased allocation was in its third year of five, including $200,000 for expanding dual-credit programming through Madison College and $1 million for support-staff compensation informed by a wage study.

Community members raised concerns about legal expenses, district vehicles, school-building capacity, transparency, open-enrollment finances, and the size of the fund balance. The district provided open-enrollment figures: $3,931,765 in levy revenue for students enrolling in and $3,314,955 in costs associated with students enrolling out. The annual meeting also approved setting the date and time of the 2027–28 annual meeting through a future board decision. No contract awards, RFPs, vendor selections, or other purchasing actions were identified.
