The Groton Board of Education Committee of the Whole met on October 13, 2026. The board discussed two education grants: an $85,000 Learner Engagement and Attendance (LEAP) grant for Fitch High School, with approximately 85% designated for home-visit activities and the remaining roughly $12,500 available for incentives and related items; and a $50,000 high-dosage tutoring grant, the maximum award, intended to support math tutoring for approximately 40–50 eighth-grade students. Staff described plans to recruit tutors and said they would also look into potential tutoring vendors, but no vendor was selected and no procurement vote or contract award was reported. The board also discussed how to use the grant to reach families in locations convenient to them and how tutoring would fit into the school schedule without displacing core classes.
The board received a detailed presentation on general-education reading interventions, special-education referral processes, dyslexia identification, staff training, and related data needs. Members requested follow-up information on intervention participation and outcomes, reading support by grade and school, and enrollment trends, including student transitions to other schools. Enrollment and budget pressures were discussed, but no purchasing decision or capital project was identified. The September 14 minutes were approved by consensus with a correction.
