Hancock County, Indiana, held a public hearing on October 15, 2026, for the South County Road 600 West roadway reconstruction project (DESNO 2201630), from County Road 600 South to Steinmeier Road near New Palestine. The preferred design would widen the road to two 12-foot lanes with shoulders, replace the Sugar Run culvert, shift part of the roadway east, and build a single-lane roundabout at Steinmeier Road. The project is estimated to cost approximately $9.3 million, including design, right-of-way, and construction. It is federally funded and subject to environmental review; no contract award or spending vote was taken at the hearing.
The project is expected to be finalized for environmental review in spring 2027, go to contractor bidding (letting) in winter 2027, and begin construction in spring 2028. The presentation estimated acquisition of 4.86 acres of permanent and 0.56 acres of temporary right-of-way, with no relocations. Public comments raised concerns about driveway access and road grades, flooding and creek maintenance, the need and cost of the roundabout, lighting, landscaping upkeep, and whether utilities should be included. Comments were accepted through October 30, 2026, and responses are to be documented in the final environmental document.
