The Salinas Historic Resources Board meeting on October 5, 2026 included an informational update on Salinas City Heritage Park. The presenter said the city allocated $200,000 per year for two years ($400,000 total) to the effort. Stakeholders presented conceptual plans and opposed locating Monterey-Salinas Transit facilities at the Intermodal Transportation Center, citing potential effects on historic views, pedestrian connections, and downtown redevelopment. Board members discussed the proposal, but took no action on it. The board approved the prior meeting minutes as amended; no procurement-related vote was taken.
Staff reported that Chinatown predevelopment work continues, including design and planning entitlements for proposed buildings at 34 and 40 Soledad Street and 45 Soledad Street. A request for developers is expected later this year for an affordable-housing developer to construct and finance those projects. Cleanup work at 37–39 Soledad Street was completed by California Premier Restoration, and the city is pursuing federal grants for further rehabilitation of the Republic Cafe and Lotus Inn. The board also discussed a draft historic plaque program; its example costs were described as unreliable, no city funding was identified, and members suggested obtaining quotes after the design is finalized.
