The New Haven Board of Education regular meeting was held October 13, 2026. The board approved the superintendent’s personnel report and a general finance and operations package covering four abstracts, two agreements, one purchase order, and two contracts. It separately approved five snow-removal agreements (agenda items 8.01–8.05); the chair noted that the agreements also require Board of Alders review. Members debated the district’s reliance on contractors and supported exploring an in-house snow-removal pilot, though no pilot action was put to a vote. Administration said a pilot would be explored this academic year after key facilities positions are filled. Two members voted against the snow agreements, while the motion passed. A public commenter raised budget concerns, citing nearly $900,000 in snow-removal contracts and spending on legal services; the snow-contract figure was not independently detailed during the meeting.
The superintendent reported state grants covering 77.5% of several facilities projects: HVAC work at Edgewood and Lincoln Bassett, with a combined project cost of about $3.7 million and approximately $2.87 million in state funding; and roof replacements at Truman, Hillhouse, and Wilbur Cross, with a combined project cost of about $18.3 million and approximately $14.2 million in state funding. Roof designs are underway, with bids and vendor selection still to come; the work is expected by spring 2027. The district also received $1.2 million in DRIP funding for HVAC work at Truman after its roof project. Administration said a proposal for quarterly indoor-air-quality surveillance and staff training would go to the Finance and Operations Committee. No vendor award for these forthcoming projects was reported.
