At its October 6, 2026 meeting, the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission held a hearing on an 1860s Italianate house proposed for redevelopment into two dwelling units. The architect presented plans that retain the front footprint while replacing the roof with a mansard and expanding the building to the rear. The commission voted unanimously to find the property preferably preserved, citing its original form and massing and its status as one of the street’s earliest houses. Commissioners indicated that a memorandum of agreement (MOA) reflecting the presented design would be needed, with the agreement to return for commission review; staff will provide the applicant guidance. No contract award or purchase was considered. The commission also discussed recurring conflicts between historic preservation and form-based zoning and the possibility of future zoning changes, but took no action on them.
In a later discussion of Community Preservation Committee funding applications, members said requests were roughly 50% higher than available funds. They mentioned an approximately $5 million ArtFarm project and discussed partial funding or borrowing against future funds, which could commit resources for many years; no funding decision was made. Other projects mentioned included a request for an Armory building-needs assessment and restoration work at the Elizabeth Peabody House clock tower and shingles. The commission also approved the September 1 and September 15 meeting minutes, with one member abstaining from the minutes vote.
