Cottonwood Heights held a Short-Term Rental Town Hall on June 30, 2026, to gather public input on possible changes to short-term rental (STR) rules and enforcement. Officials said no decisions had been made. The city reported that it has contracted with Granicus for compliance software that monitors more than 70 booking platforms, identifies licensed and unlicensed listings, and supports notices and complaint tracking. Staff reported 108 active approved licenses and 301 active listings detected by the platform. Current licensing includes a one-time $350 conditional-use application fee; officials discussed possible licensing revenue—roughly $250,000 annually under an illustrative estimate—as a way to offset administration and enforcement costs, not as an adopted budget decision.

Proposals under consideration include licensing more STRs subject to a cap and operating standards, shifting enforcement from criminal proceedings to a civil process, and potentially contracting with an administrative law judge. Other ideas included operator response-time requirements, inspections, education, tax reporting, and limits on transfers and properties per operator. No procurement award, spending motion, or policy vote occurred. Staff said the proposal would next be discussed by the STR policy committee, City Council, and Planning Commission before any code changes are considered; public feedback will continue to be accepted.
