The City of Sacramento Disabilities Advisory Commission met on March 5, 2025, for review and comment on a proposed update to the city’s Universal Design Ordinance and two pedestrian-safety projects. Staff proposed clarifying where and how the ordinance applies, including requiring accessible options to be offered in each marketed phase of a project and removing references to specific zoning districts. Commissioners emphasized broader outreach to disability-serving organizations and clearer, more accessible information for homebuyers. Staff will revise the ordinance and bring it back for adoption; no vote was taken on the proposal.
Public Works presented a 2025 pedestrian-crossing project to add rectangular rapid-flashing beacons at four crossings, with a construction contract expected to be awarded in fall 2025 and construction planned for 2026. Staff also presented phase two of the Accessible Pedestrian Signals project: work at 14 intersections, including curb-ramp reconstruction at selected locations, with an estimated total cost of $1.6 million. Commissioners asked staff to return with more detail on how the beacon locations were selected and raised concerns about equitable project distribution and ongoing signal maintenance. Both presentations were for review and comment; no contract award or spending motion was approved. The commission separately approved its consent calendar and nominations for the Tim Haley Awards.
