The City of Sacramento Disabilities Advisory Commission met on May 7, 2025. The principal procurement- and infrastructure-related discussion concerned pedestrian safety at Freeport Boulevard and Kitchener Road near New Technology Early College High School. Students, families, and school representatives asked the City to accelerate safety improvements or consider an interim measure. Public Works staff said the signal is in final design as part of a federally funded package involving nine signals; construction bids are expected to be sought in late fall, with construction anticipated to begin in summer 2026. Staff will report at the June 4 meeting on the project schedule, related improvements, and coordination with Sacramento Regional Transit regarding the nearby bus stop. No contract award, bid approval, or spending allocation was voted on at this meeting.
Public Works also presented the completed ADA self-evaluation and public-right-of-way transition plan, which is targeted for City Council consideration in June. The plan includes a new GIS system to track sidewalks, curb ramps, and accessible pedestrian signals, with staff training and a public-facing signal-information update planned. A policy change described in the presentation requires accessible pedestrian signals with every signal modification. The Commission approved its consent calendar and voted to extend the meeting; neither vote concerned procurement. Other discussion covered the voluntary Return Me Safe police registry, accessibility concerns with Regional Transit’s paratransit scheduling transition, and community recognition awards.
