The Fairfax County Public Schools Audit Committee met on October 12, 2026. The committee reviewed an audit of vendor management for contracts administered by the Department of Special Services and Instructional Services, covering contracts active from July 2024 through December 2025. Auditors examined approximately $9.3 million in purchase orders and found about $3,200 in errors across four contracts, including charges above contract rates and duplicate or overlapping services; approximately $1,900 in erroneous payments had not been detected. The audit classified both findings as low risk and recommended documented checks of purchase orders and invoices, along with annual contractor performance assessments. The departments concurred and reported corrective actions; staff said they would follow up on whether amounts were recovered and report back to the committee.
The committee also received an audit-recommendation update. Four recommendations from the procurement-process audit remained open, including revisions to procurement regulations and improvements to vendor review and performance measures; staff expected to provide another update after validation. The committee discussed delays in completing regulations and asked that future audit updates better align with meeting dates. Members also asked about sole-source contracting: staff said the higher share reported for Special Services reflected specialized needs and noted that sole-source contracts over $200,000 go to the board for approval after multiple levels of review. No contract award or new spending approval was identified; the committee approved prior meeting minutes and took no procurement vote.
