The Modesto City Schools Board of Education held a special meeting on October 12, 2026, beginning with condolences for two Modesto High School students who died in a railway collision. The main agenda item was an informational workshop introducing a “Portrait of a Graduate,” intended to define the character traits and transferable skills students should develop alongside academic knowledge. Trustees discussed student readiness for college, careers, and civic life, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, empathy, resilience, and community involvement. They raised questions about how the skills would be taught and assessed, developmental appropriateness, implementation consistency, alignment with existing programs, and how future priorities would be reflected in budgets and funding.
The superintendent said the district is gathering research and input from students, staff, and families; after collecting the data, it will identify themes and prioritize traits and skills. No procurement actions, contract awards, vendor selections, spending approvals, or budget allocations were identified. The board unanimously approved a motion to adjourn.
