The Santa Monica Rent Control Board’s regular meeting was held October 8, 2026. In closed session, the Board authorized the general counsel to file an amicus brief in Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles v. City of Los Angeles, which had been accepted for review by the U.S. Supreme Court. The Board unanimously granted a permanent rent-control exemption for units E and F at 2820 Exposition Boulevard and unanimously affirmed a hearing officer’s decision on a tenant’s construction-related rent-decrease appeal. The transcript records a motion on another single-family-home exemption application but does not include its vote outcome.
The Board received an annual report on collection of past-due rent-control registration fees: the corrected total collected for the current cycle was $81,441.63. Staff said collection efforts are reducing the backlog and help support balanced budgets and limit pressure to raise registration fees. Public comments raised concerns about rent-decrease petition procedures, landlord maintenance and costs, registration-fee enforcement, and tenant protections. No procurement activity, contract awards, or purchasing decisions were identified.
