The City of Sacramento Active Transportation Commission meeting on November 16, 2023, discussed several transportation infrastructure projects and grant-funded planning efforts. Staff reported that the R Street pedestrian-crossing project at 29th and 30th Streets had received a grant and was in preliminary design and environmental review. The approximately $4.6 million project, developed with Sacramento Regional Transit, includes traffic signals, accessible pedestrian features, curb extensions, and pavement rehabilitation. Staff anticipated seeking a construction contract award near the end of 2024, with construction planned for 2025. The commission also reviewed safety improvements proposed for the Jackrabbit Trail crossing at Arena Boulevard; commissioners offered design feedback and asked staff to return with further design updates, but no project award or spending vote was recorded for that item.

Staff presented four proposed applications to the Caltrans Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program, covering corridor planning and wayfinding efforts. The program offers grants of $100,000 to $700,000, with a stated 11.47% required match; staff said the Cityโ€™s actual contribution is typically closer to 20%, generally from its active transportation funding. The commission voted to recommend that City Council approve the four proposed applications. It also voted to forward the 2023 Active Transportation Commission annual report to City Council, incorporating requested edits. No vendor selections or procurement contracts were approved at this meeting.
