The Fitchburg Commission on Aging Well meeting on October 8, 2026, approved the prior meeting’s minutes and heard a presentation on the YMCA’s planned Fitchburg facility. The project is estimated at $58 million, supported by a $35 million capital campaign that the presenter said was about 90% of its goal, approximately $4 million expected from the sale of the existing YMCA, New Markets Tax Credits, and potentially long-term debt. The facility is planned to include child care for more than 100 children and space for Access Community Health services, with opening currently projected for around March 2028. Commissioners discussed coordination with the YMCA and other community organizations; no city contract award or procurement vote was identified.
Much of the remaining discussion concerned staffing and funding for the city’s senior and community services amid budget constraints. Staff described an organizational study being conducted by a consultant; the related one-time expense arose midyear and may not have been budgeted, and the study’s recommendations are pending. A proposed forestry fee was also discussed as moving through committee review toward possible Council consideration. The meeting did not approve a spending amendment, contract, or other procurement action; the minutes approval was the only motion noted.
